Evaluation 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our title sequence would attract an audience mainly of 15-30 year olds as this is the demographic we feel would relate and enjoy the themes of our film. The film may also attract an older audience because we have the older character of the detective who the older audience could relate too, as well as enjoying the thriller theme as this was seen through the ages of pre established fanbases  of other thriller films such as Gone Girl and Gone Baby Gone. The actors used in the film also attract these age ranges through star power as they will be familiar with actors such as Kristen Stewart as she is popular with a teenage fanbase by being in films such as Twilight so therefore may be interested in viewing the film.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We deciced that the genre for our title sequence was thriller,we researched the general codes and conventions for a thriller film and discovered that thriller are usually framed on building tensions throughout. The antagonist is also often kept secret throughout the film until very late on. Many close up shots are used to show emotions of characters within the title sequence. We decided to use  the codes and conventions of thriller and make our title sequence conventional and to go along with the thriller theme. The shots in our title sequence could be said to be conventional as they are very dark and quick which moves along with the story. We made the shots black and white and included intense music to move along the storyline and build tension. The montage scenes used made it clear to the audience that the main element of the plot was to find her brother through a journey, we used the montage to continually display this. The props and mise-en-scene of the title sequence fitted with the thriller theme as we used fake police evidence folders and files. This tells the audience that the criminal case was reopened and that it had an involvement of the police in the plot without actually physically showing this. The handwritten typography continued the theme of thriller by suggesting they looked like clues. The theme also kept to the codes and conventions of a thriller film as we used an investigation and secrecy of a character to create suspense. We also used editing and filming such as the low lighting, filters, music and props to enhance the thriller theme

Part 1:

Title Sequence final cut

Editing Journal 7:

 Journal 7:

Today i put in the re-filmed scenes and deleted the old scenes as we no longer needed them. I then decided to make these black and white as the colours under the torch light appeared very vibrant. Making them black and white toned them down and also madd them match the titles better. I feel as though it also make it appear much more creepy and discomforting as you are not too sure what is in the room apart from the main protagonist and evidence. I then watched for a final time to make sure that everything looked as we hoped and then imported it to youtube as the final draft.

Filming Journal 5

Journal 5:

We went back to the drama studio to continue to re-film as we did not get all of it done the previous day. We also made the improvements such as filming the close up of the toy props to create the narrative that a child has gone missing. Once again we made the room pitch black and used a phone light to light up the scene to continue to creepy atmosphere which is seen throughout the title sequence

Journal 4

Journal 4:

We decided to re-film the main part of our title sequence which involved me as the main protagonist opening the box and looking at all of the old evidence. We went to ask if we could film in the drama room as it is pitch black. We went there with all the props and the same outfit and re-filmed. We used a single light from a phone torch. We tried to use a spot light but it didn't work as it lit up the background instead of just the box. We then filmed it all and then finished in 20 mins and begun to edit it, changing filters and colours.

props

We decided to remove the montage  of the arrows and the roads as it did not match the title sequence and we wanted to film somthing that made the narrative more clear. We decided to make it look as though the main character was planning her journey by preparing her tickets and joruney. We feel as though these props display the narrrative more effectively and appear very nicely on the title sequence compared to the montage as they appeared random and did not show the audience what the narrative is.

Problems whilst editing

  1. The MACs that we edited on were very slow and sometimes lagged making it a very slow process when editing and meant that we could not work to the speed we needed to.
  2. The other classes needed to use the computers meaning we lost editing time.
  3. My personal MAC had loads of technical difficulties including, loosing the title sequence twice, not being able to open final cut pro and having to change accounts twice which both had the sames problems. This resulted in me having to long in to a particular MAC with the teachers log in. This made editing very difficult because i did not have some of the resources on that computer and if someone was using that specific computer then i could not edit.

Feedback from From First Daft Viewing

This is the feedback from when we showed are title sequence first draft. The feedback came back quite positively with just a few areas of improvement. We found out that the stop motion worked well and looked effective in creating the eerie atmosphere in our title sequence. We found out that the road signs and arrows montage did not work as it just confused the narrative and did not fit. We will have to film a new montage to make the narrative clearer.

Title Sequence- First Cut

Filming Journal 3

Today we had to present our first draft of our title sequence to our class. We came across many improvements that were suggested such as the weather being too bright and sunny as she said it didn't look as dark and eerie as it should have. Also they didn't like the road signs and cars as they said it didn't really explain the narrative.

Journal 4:

Today we added the stop motion titles onto the title sequence, this involved us putting all of the pictures together and speeding it up to make it appear as though the note is unraveling. I also changed the colours to make it darker and to make the writing and th creases on the paper more noticeable. I feel as though i edited this well an put it in good areas of the title sequence, as it broke up some of the longer scenes.

Typography-Stop Motion

We decided

Sound and Audio

For our title sequence we were influenced by Gone Girl. This title sequence is mainly silent butcome across as quite eerrie and dark as it is matched with the darkeness. We wanted to create a similar effect with our title sequence. Because we had a missing boy we wanted to create something creepy to match this but be dark at the same time. We decided to record Charlotte saying a few lines from the Grimms tale of Hansel and Grettel. Whist editing we realised that it didnt sound as eerie as we would have liked so we decided to add an echo to make the recording sound distorted and we also added a nursery rhyme song in the background which sounds very diturbing and uncomfortable. This therefore gives the audience the feek that something bad has happened to the child because it is linking childlike things with negative ideas. For the rest of our title sequence we wanted to create an atmosphere that would still be eerie but also be quite sad so that the audience would understand what the main protagonist is feeling. We settled on light piano music which created a slow pace but also allows the audience to connect with the main protagonist and understand the tone for the whole film.

When we were finding our music we used website such as:
http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/cinematic
https://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/
We looked for music that was fast paced and would go along with the theme of mystery. We found music in the end in the youtube royalty free music library and found the track of the creepy sounding nursery thyme that we use in the beginning of the piece. We found our other music that we used on http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/cinematic and downloaded them to iTunes before transferring them on to final cut pro.

Today i continued to cut down the video, I mananged to finish this so that all the clips were to the correct length and any mistakes had been deleted. I then began to search through transitions to find the same transition that I used on the news video and used this throughout my video to ensure continuity and a good flow and pace of the title sequence. I also began to search on websites for royalty free music that would fit our title sequence.

Journal 2:

I begun editing by uploading the video clips and putting them all in a final cut pro file. Once imported, I put the clips in the right order, I did this by dragging the clips into the correct rhetorical order. I then used the blade tool to cut out unessecary parts of the video or some filming mistakes that may have occured.

Editing Journal 1

Journal 1:

Today I edited the first part of our title sequence. I downloaded a few clips of news reportings of a missing child and cut them down to very small sections of the main headlines. I then put these all together and added a transition and buzz noise to make it appear as though the channel is changing but the story is on every channel as it is that important. This begins to build the narrative that her brother has gone missing.

Fonts and Typography

We started to look for fonts on Dafont  http://www.dafont.com/theme.php?cat=603
we looked at fonts such as:

We wanted to choose a font that looked handwritten to make it appear as though it had left as a clue or almost childlike.

Problems when filming

When filming we didnt come across many problems but, as expected, there were a few that limited our title sequence in some ways.
A main problem that we faced is that the weather on the day we could all meet up to film was very sunny so this showed in all of our scenes. This does not match our narrative of mystery and darkness so we have to figure out how to make it appear darker using filters and mising the colours on the video.
Another problem was trying to make the narrative clear. We attempted to do this through the majority mise en scene such as our props of the missing poster etc, but we did have some issues of not displaying this correctly when showing our title sequence to our peers and teachers.

Filming Journal 2

Journal 2-
We all met at 12:00 in Bexleyheath and then travelled to our location for filming to start the filming of the main part of our title sequence. We managed to film the whole scene of finding the evidence box and opening it in around 3 hours. We used a range of different camera angles such as close ups, over the shoulder and medium long shot as well as match on action. We also filmed the main protagonist replacing an old missing poster with a new one oveer the top. This was to create the narrative that time had gone on but the brother had not been found but the case is reopened as their are new posters.

Filming Journal

Journal 1-
Today we went out of school with all of our equipment and wanted to begin to film our montage. We came across the first problem, because when we got to the location we wanted to film at, there were not suitable signs and it was too busy so we had to change location. Once we had settled on a location at Bexleyheath we began to film road signs, cars and arrows to show that the main protagonist is on her journey.

Wednesday 16 March 2016

Location

We found some difficulty when deciding where to film our title sequence. We wanted to film in an attic to show that she is rediscovering the evidence and clues from the previous investigation of her missing brother. However we could not find an attic to film in so we had to make do with a shed. This was quite a good location as it kind of looked like an attic on the video.

We also decided to make a montage to break up our title sequence and to continue the pace. We decided to film road signs and arrows to show the journey that the main protagonist goes on in attempt to find her brother. We went and found some around Bexleyheath and incoperated these into our title sequence.

Story Board

This is the story board for out title sequence. This is our first idea and vision for what we want the title sequence to look like. This does not include where we put the names, what typography we will have or the colour and full scenes of the title sequence. However it does show  our general idea of what we want it to look like and how we are going to display the narratve through the different scenes. This will most likely be adapted and more scenes will be added and changed during the filming process.
